Writing Good Definitive Sentences

Refuge: (n) shelter or protection from danger or trouble

A direct definition sentence uses a synonym of the word to make the meaning of the sentence clear.

Ex. Many people in dangerous situations in foreign countries seek refuge, or protection, in their country’s embassy.

A contrast sentence uses an antonym, and a contrast phrase, to show the contrasted meaning of the word.

Ex. The little boy sought refuge under the tree in the lightning storm, but he did not know that being beneath a tree was the most dangerous place to be, since lightning is attracted to tall objects.

An example sentence contextualizes (or puts the word in its proper context) to makes its meaning clear. (Three clues)

Ex. At the height of the storm we took refuge under the awnings of the building.
